The first ship funds date back to the 14th century. The historic company form of the shipping partnership (joint ownership of a ship) is still a part of German company law.
Improvements in Germany as a location for shipping
The German shipping industry has moved forwards strongly, becoming one of the world’s major shipping locations since the introduction of the tonnage tax in 1999 and the improvement in conditions for operation of ships under German flag.
The German merchant fleet
In the last years the German merchant fleet has grown to some 3,000 ships registered in Germany, making up 8.5% of global tonnage, putting Germany in third place following Greece and Japan (according to data from the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL). German shipowners are the world leaders in the container segment, with a market share of 36.1% (by deadweight tonnage).
Nordcapital ship funds
Nordcapital’s largest business area is shipping – Nordcapital has so far initiated 97 ship funds with 120 ships. Nordcapital’s shipping company E.R. Schiffahrt is one of the world’s largest container ship charter companies. At present, it is responsible for project development and commercial and technical management of 77 container ships, with a total of some 420,000 TEU.
